RE: Permanent Residents

"Don't get no better than this!"Good sentiment, bad English. It gets the point across and isn't that the point? Beats Spanish...or Farsi.

RE: Permanent Residents

We are permanent residents by choice. We have a 5 bedroom/3 bath house in Arkansas that is for sale, and yet we took our 5'er to Texas and are living in it. We had to come back last week to the "house" and can't wait to leave and will be pulling out tomorrow. Our 5'er is more comfortable and easier to take care of than this big monstrosity. We have found that living in closer quarters has lead to more conversations and a closer relationship with one another...after 40 yrs. We have more amentities for a cheaper price than we would by living here - an indoor pool as an example. The campground is very neat and clean and has restrictions for their permanent residents that keep it from looking like a junkyard. Only 1 couple has been there 5 yrs. and they are extremely neat. Most are there waiting on a house to be built or working for a season. We have plans to build or buy at some point, but not sure when or where, so we wait and enjoy our lifestyle. "Having" to live in such a state is not a necessity for us financially, but it is a necessity for us emotionally. So you see, there are many reasons people do what they do.

RE: Refrigerator fires probably very common...

My Norcold went up in flames last May and it was less than a year old. Only quick thinking by my wife saved the rig from completely going up. Just got it back from the dealer last week. Doug Dio you mind me asking what she did to save the rig? This is something I've thought about...the "what would I do if" scenario.

RE: Refrigerator fires probably very common...

Common knowledge that pretty much every Dometic RV refrigerator has been recalled to install anti fire countermeasures. Perhaps this person didn't get the notification.... When we bought our 5'er used, the previous owner called us about a week later about a recall letter he had, but his Model # wasn't in the letter, so it wasn't recalled. However, after continually reading about this problem, yesterday I decided to ck. with Dometic - yep - mine's been recalled! SO, we sit in Arkansas ready to go back to Texas, but I made an appt. for Monday to get it fixed on the way out of town. 15 mins. they told me. So we are grateful for everyone's encouraging us to get it cked. I feel very blessed that we didn't have a fire this past summer sitting in Texas while we were asleep some night.

RE: Motorhomes in Aspen, Colorado? NOPE

Aspen is NOT a place for motor homes or any sort of RV in my opinion. We made a terrible mistake (must have been the jacka$$ driving ;) ) a few years ago and came through Aspen. We were sick of interstate and decided to get off the around Glenwood and cut through the mountains to I-25 South. To make a long story shorter, I did not heed the signs about vehicles over a certain length not allowed on the road across Independence Pass. I believe the length was 30 but I may be wrong. Anyway, we were 36 and thank goodness no towed! The road kep getting narrower and narrower until the center line was gone. No shoulder on one side - nor guard rail either!! Rocky outcrops on the other side. Creeping around the turns hugging the "shoulder" and dodging snags on the other side. It began to get a little wider and what do we meet? Some poor guy from Texas in a 36 footer, pulling a jeep, coming down the other side. We stopped and he said the road was passable where he came from. I told him what we had just experienced. He said he could not turn around now! I hope he made it to the bottom OK. When we got to the top, there was an observation area/pullout parking. Clouds, two claps of thunder and we had the dangest wind, snow and ice storm I have been in for many years. Two inches in like 10 minutes. We had to wait for a half hour or so and it began to melt. Down the other side and darn glad to be off that mountain!! This is my EXACT fear of traveling in the mountains...so I've got to figure out a way to keep OFF those types of roads. So how does one know where NOT to go with their RV? Trial and error? Or is there a book?

RE: Step up rear kitchen/ dining like Dutchmen Denali 31rgb-M5

Don't know the Dutchman brand, but we love our rear kitchen. We have a used Newmar and they are made so well that they outlast the newer models of other brands. Might want to ck. out a used Newmar - bette RV, cheaper price.

RE: cat sense

We returned to our Arkansas home last week to take care of some business and Barney the cat came with us of course. At first he was nervous about where we were, but it took about 30 seconds to remember where he was and he RAN up the driveway and you could just see him saying "I'M HOME!!!!!!" He's been outside all day everyday, coming in at night to sleep. One day we missed him and couldn't find him for anything...well, we finally found him...inside the 5'er, ready to go! So I guess he has 2 homes in his mind now, which is real good, cause once this one sells he won't be back. But for now, he's having a ball. All that being said, I wanted to share one thing...on our screened in porch here we have a small area cut out of the screen between the door and the wall that makes an entrance/exit kitty door for Barney...well...he can't get through the hole...he's too fat! Since being here a week he's been loosing weight, which is great, but he still can't get through that door...poor fat cat...

RE: Waffle Iron

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I would like to find a healthy pancake recipe, possibly with bran or something. Any ideas? Rebecca I add wheat germ to my bisquick recipe...they have 2 other recipes on the back to zip it up a bit - adding sugar and vanilla and baking powder.

RE: Dummy with a Diesel

Have you watched the DVD/CD that you should have been mailed or should have came with the truck with host Sam Memmolo? Anyway, the dealer is right on all counts. Use the EB, don't baby it, and you must use CJ-4 (special) oil. I never got one! Guess who I'm calling in the morning? I VAGUELY remember the sales mgr. mentioning getting one for me...now that I think back. But it totally makes sense that they'd have a DVD on this truc - it has so many gizmos on it, you need a "show and tell" video.

RE: Dummy with a Diesel

Thanks to you all - 1 thing I did forget - there was a charge for an air filter in that final amt. Still seems too high to me. PROBLEM: We have this 1 piece of transportation and we are stationary in Texas, so it gets used to do all the in town running around...toodling back and forth. So what to do? We will be hitting the road in the Spring, hopefully. But when we start it up and run a couple of miles and back, should we let it sit and heat up a bit?

RE: Canning

Get the Ball Blue Book in the canning section at WalMart. It has tons of recipes that are great. My apple butter recipe: Is exactly what's in the Blue Book, except I dehydrate the sliced apples and run the peelings through the food processor to a fine grind, then measure them out per the recipe and cook it down, adding all the other ingredients, then run it through a sieve. Process . Everyone loves my apple butter and they never know it's the peelings.

Dummy with a Diesel

We bought our 2008 Dodge Ram 1 ton dually last Dec. 28th...almost a year ago...wow...Anyway - The oil has been changed twice. Yesterday when we had it changed the sign on the wall at the dealership said $59.95 for oil change on a diesel...ok, no problem. The final bill? Over $82.00. Why I asked? Well, ya gotta use this special oil in the '08's. What if I don't use it? "Then your in danger of having your warranty voided." What? Ok, so now I'm on the hook for this 'special oil'...what's this about? Anyone know? Also, I haven't been using the exhaust brake enough and the turbo needs to be cleaned - it's under warranty, so that's good. So do you use the exhaust brake all the time? The dealership said they didn't know...maybe yes, maybe no...Some have said "Sure, use it anytime, any speed" and then others have said "Not at high speeds." So which is it? Thanks in advance!

RE: Anyone Working at Home Online Business?

Actually I do have some information that may be of help to you. I saw a lady on Fox Financial News talking about her book "Will Work from Home" by Tory Johnson. I downloaded it onto my Kindle (electronic book reader) and found it quite interesting. You can puchase it at any local bookstore or Amazon.com. She is the ABC Financial advisor for Good Morning America (I think) and she and a friend decided to research work from home situations and found that with the new electronic age we live in that there are many jobs available to be done from home...example: Answering the phones and taking orders for 1-800-flowers. When people call to place an order, you take it and forward it on to the necessary people. Many other examples and I bought it because our twin daughters were talking about work from home situations. Also businesses that will let you work from home instead of coming into the office. The other thing I have is on my other computer that is in the shop but coming out today. I bookmarked the info. and can't remember all it's about but do remember it's for older people and it was featured on one of the morning news programs, so I looked it up and bookmarked it. I'm fortunate that I don't HAVE to work, but ya just never know what the future holds, so for future reference I got the info. As soon as I can I'll send you a link. Hope this helps. Get the book...

RE: closed on our house today....full timing now!

Oh, congratulations!...as I sit in Arkansas in my 5 bedroom, 3 bath, 3 acres house and my HOME sits in the driveway. We moved into the 5'er in May and took her to Texas and sat stationary and brought it back here on Sunday to take care of some trees felled by Hurricane Ike. As I sleep in the bed inside the HOUSE I want to go HOME in the driveway to my REAL bed. We leave on Sat., hopefully. I'm happy for your sale and need prayers to sell mine! Thanks in advance!

RE: Rear Kitchen

We have a 1998 Newmar Mountainaire, rear kitchen, double slides, 1 in the bedroom and LOVE it. I have a big pantry, tons of counter space, lots of cabinets, every kitchen gadget a person could ever want. I vote for rear kitchens. Those who don't have them don't know what they're talking about.

RE: Do you lock your doors when you leave your rv when at a park

We lock the doors and leave everything outside for them to take - that way, they don't damage the RV!

RE: How often should you have to defrost frig fins?

Sound about normal to me. I used two Dometics for full-time living for 7 years and SHOULD have defrosted as often as you do but many times I didn't get it done for 2 or 3 months or longer. They use more propane as those fins ice up. To defrost I used a hair dryer after shutting the fridge off. Took out the top skinny shelf and put a baking tray on the next shelf to catch the water/ice. Seems like it took less than 10 minutes. This was for the fins only as the freezers only needed defrosting once or twice per year. Sold them last March because of Dometic's recall: 1) these were built-in a regular (off-grid) home so it was a major pain if I wanted their band-aid shield installed and 2) I was uncomfortable keeping two fridges in my house that had a manufacture's acknowlegement that they could start a serious fire. The hairdryer should be plugged in to a ground-fault interupt circuit, which is what your kitchen should have. Be careful using electricity around water. Phil Your method is the same one I use - 4 mos. before defrosting...I'm lazy. took about 15 mins.

RE: Government Seizes Washington Mutual !

I have a question...we're leaving to return to Arkansas tomorrow morning and were planning on leaving the 5'er in Texas and return in about a week - we're staionary in Texas now and have established residency here. However, with all this financial stuff going on, I'm thinking we might want to take the 5'er back with us cause we may not be able to return if the financial crisis gets so bad that we can't access our money. Whatcha think? I've got today to decide. Tough call and I am afraid only you can make that decision. I am bias of course since I live in Texas, but I am not leaving here. I put off several projects for now, camper shopping, cruise planning, another major remodel ( kitchen and washroom) . Right now I am putting my cash reserves where I can access them and I know where my gold is stashed. personally I fell like we are not hearing the whole story yet.. but feel like in say a week, we should have a better idea. What is it in Arkansas that requires your attention that you can't do on the phone or some other way? Do you have a good place for your 5'er? if not drop me a message, may have an cheap, safe offer for you. What is in Arkasas? A 5 bedroom, 3 bath house on 3 acres. It's for sale and we need to go ck. on it and do some cleanup after Hurricane Ike. I'm transitioning back to Texas (I'm originally from Texas) and WILL live here. But we have assets in Arkansas that need our attention. PM me your info. regarding what you're referring to on the cheap, safe offer. Thanks!
